TECHNIQUES TAUGHT INCLUDE:

  • Preparation of a stone or brick wall for fresco painting.
  • Preparation of two types of support for frescoes.
  • Preparation and laying of lime plaster (intonaco).
  • Painting buon fresco using natural pigments.
  • Marble dust intonaco - for a very smooth white surface on which to fresco paint.
  • Stucco lucido - emulsified wax painted onto fresh plaster, as used in wall paintings in Pompei.
  • Secco painting - painting onto the dry fresco with egg tempera.
  • Sgraffitto - white lime is scrapped back to reveal coloured plaster.
  • Gilding onto a fresco – application of silver and gold leaf using wax or oil size.
  • Preparation of two types of support for egg tempera painting, plywood and canvas.
  • Preparation of gesso.
  • Laying of the gesso ground.
  • Preparation of egg tempera.
  • Painting with natural pigments using egg tempera as the medium.
